Why Engagement Is Not One-Size Fits All — And Why It Is THE Best Measure of Inclusion

Engagement — which leads to retention and greater productivity and, therefore, to greater business results — is beneficial to all employees across their vast diversity.  But engagement is in the eye of the beholder. A company’s culture may be highly engaging for certain demographic groups but not others. Or different groups may be more engaged by different engagement drivers.  This is why it’s imperative to break down engagement results by diversity dimensions. It’s in the variances between groups that a company’s story of inclusion is revealed.

In this Diversity Best Practices session we will explore the keys to engaging the different racial/ethnic, generational, and gender groups.  Are there ways to measure the engagement of groups that rarely get counted in engagement surveys such as LGBT and people with disability?  How do we take into account the engagement of people with multidimensional identities such as those who are multiracial or when comparing, say, Millennial women of color with Millennial white women?  How do we explain counterintuitive results where white males consistently show some of the lowest engagement scores while Latinos the highest? And what is the role of flexibility and technology in the engagement scores of the most diverse workforce ever?

 10:30 – 10:45 Break

10:45 am – 12:00 pm Think Tank Sessions - Rethinking Traditional Engagement Measures

What are new ways to measure engagement and leverage technology to take into consideration generational differences and multiple dimensions of diversity?  What is lacking in terms of engagement measures, and how can we fine-tune methods to pick up on variances and intricacies?   Breakout sessions explore innovative thinking, prevalent challenges, and new approaches to traditional engagement drivers and measures

  1. i.  Engagement & Measurement Strategies for People of Color

What drivers positively impact the engagement of Black/African American, Asian, Hispanic/Latin-American, and Multiracial employee populations within companies, and what are effective measures to identify results?  How can companies tap employee network and affinity groups as important resources to improve the engagement of these groups?

Facilitator: Dee Schneider / Director - Operations and Talent / Deloitte Services LP

  1. ii.  Engagement & Measurement Strategies for Hidden Groups

Some groups are not traditionally included in engagement scores – whether by choice or as a result of a lack of effective measures to capture the necessary information. These hidden minority groups – such as LGBT and People with Disabilities – share many aspects in common, and may be ‘in the closet’ for a variety of reasons.  What are the sensitivities and challenges, and how are companies working to access, encourage, and engage invisible minorities within their organizations?

Facilitator: Francia Guzman / Head Global Diversity & Inclusion / Visa, Inc.

  1. iii.  Measuring the Impact of Flexibility On Engagement

Explore engagement drivers and measures through the lens of a work life perspective.    Prominent groups in the talent pool consistently rate Flexibility as the top critical driver of engagement and performance.  How has this reality impacted companies’ thinking around flex and engagement measures?  Different diverse cultures have varying relationships with their families and different work life needs – what can be done to effectively capture the subtle and overt variances and introduce relevant engagement practices across the board?  How do results vary across diversity dimensions, and what are companies doing to capture and leverage the necessary data?

Facilitator:  Jack Quirk / Staff Vice President – Organizational Development / Wellpoint (Anthem BCBS)

  1. iv.  Engagement & Measurement Strategies for the Emerging Workforce

We have a new generation of workers on the scene.  They move, think, and behave in ways that are fundamentally different than the workforce has in the last 50 years.  This emerging workforce is not only young, but it is also more racially diverse, gender-balanced, and open to multiple forms of differences – not to mention the fact that it is more digital, interconnected and global than anything we’ve ever seen before.   Given how different they are – it should come as no surprise that what has traditionally worked at engaging employees is going to fall short for this group.  What are the new engagement drivers that must be considered to engage and increase inclusion with this emerging workforce?

Facilitator:  Shelby D. Moran / Senior Manager, Global Workforce Engagement / Marriott International

12:00 pm – 12:45 pm       Networking Luncheon
